Seven Sleepers - St. Swithun Print
Written by Cerkes

The cave of the seven sleepers is well-visited but you cannot see anything except for the already mentioned wishes on the fence and seven tombs. But the legend is very interesting as it says that this place was changed into a tomb church in Byzantine times. It is a cave on the foot of Mount Panayir where also Mother Mary lived. Seven Christians fled to this cave because of the Heathens in the time of Imperator Decius. They were found in there and therefore walled in the cave while still living. But they did not die they only slept for 200 years. Then they were found. They woke up to be witnesses for the resurrection from death and died shortly after.

Hint: This pilgrims' place about Mary and Seven Sleepers is worth visiting for religious and in history interested people. But don't miss to have a rest under the trees at the place shortly before the entrance to Seven Sleepers. The restaurant is typical and therefore very comfortable. You can enjoy Ayran and Gözleme there, which is made freshly on the fireplace by women. You can chose the filling: potatoes, minced meat or cheese. You can also see the horse carriages pass by that you can see round the mount of Mother Mary. If you visit this place by car you can also drive past it and look at the area. You will be surprised how many plantings for peaches there are.
