After Jesus' death Mary, his mother, came together with John to Ephesus and lived there until she died. At least it is said to be like that. But you could hardly find a place more beautiful in this area. The ancient cite is on top of a mountain that is next to Ephesus and very steep. You couldn't walk up there on foot.

The entrance fee is low as far as I remember. The cite was visited by Pope Paul VI in 1967 and by Pope A. Jean Paul and declared as a pilgrims' cite. It is visited by thousands of Christians every year. The special thing you recognize at once is the long fence on which people from all over the world fix wishes and petitions. By the way people also do this at the seven sleepers' place. They use handkerchiefs, pieces of paper, draperies or everything else they have with them for it. Also the new Pope Benedict visited this cite at the end of 2006..

At the entrance of this "tomb" you get information about this cite in different languages. This chapel that is looked after by nuns and priests all the time is well-visited. You are told at the entrance with sign language that you should cover yourself and be quiet.

Hint: This pilgrims' place about Mary and seven sleepers is worth visiting for religious and in history interested people. But don't miss to have a rest under the trees at the place shortly before the entrance to Seven Sleepers. The restaurant is typical and therefore very comfortable. You can enjoy Ayran and Gözleme there, which is made freshly on the fireplace by women. You can chose the filling: potatoes, minced meat or cheese. You can also see the horse carriages pass by that you can see round the mount of Mother Mary. If you visit this place by car you can also drive past it and look at the area. You will be surprised how many plantings for peaches there are.
