Sardes
Do you know where the proverb "I am not Croesus" (I am not made of money) is from? 90 km away from Izmir towards Usak you can find the capital of the Lydians (until 546 BC). It is because of the river Poktolos (today: Sart) that this city became very rich as it had a lot of gold dust in it. The last Lydian king was this before mentioned Croesus. He was defeated by the Persians and the treasures were brought to Persia, now Iran. In 334 BC Alexander the Great made this city Roman. By the way the first money was coined there.
You cannot impress me very easily with ruins and excavation cites as Ephesus is just in front of my door. But the Gymnasium and bath is still very impressing for me just as the synagogue of the 3rd century and the theatre which were rebuild. One of the Artemis temples in best conditions you can find here. You can even see it in the dark! You can look at many pictures about it in my Galery.
