The museum in Ephesus which was built according to an order of the ministry for culture of the Republic of Turkey, is beside its important pieces from Mycenae, Arcadian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljukian and Ottoman Ages very important and well known for its cultural activities.
After the first excavations in 1929 the museum was built as a depot. By adding more buildings the museum grew, especially during the last few years. As the museum in Ephesus is a museum that shows pieces that were found in and around Ephesus they preferred using a system to arrange the pieces according to the place they were found, and not chronological or typological. So the different departments of the museum are: pieces that were found in the houses on the hill and households, coins and treasures, pieces that were found in tombs, pieces that were found in Artemis' area and pieces belonging to the cult according to the imperator. Except from these rooms there are also architectural and sculptural pieces shown in the garden. Some of the most famous pieces in Ephesus museum are the two big sculptures of Artemis, Eros' head, the sculpture of Eros together with dolphins, Sokrates' head.
You can still find about 50,000 pieces in the collection of the museum of Ephesus. They still make excavations and many inhabitants of this area give pieces to them so that's why the museum gets richer of culture. To let people see those new pieces they built a new room only for those "new found pieces". But even this room is not enough for all they newly get. They often have to show those pieces in new rooms.
For this reason the room "houses on the hills and households" was put into a new order. New pieces were shown together and they tried to arrange them up to topics. In this room they show pieces like medical and cosmetic things, jewelry, lights, music instruments, games, hand looms, small sculptures used in the households, sculptures of the gods and imperators, furniture, all in all you can say things that you need in your daily life. You can also see a whole room out of one of the houses on the hills called Sokrates' room. This room was decorated with friezes, mosaics, different furniture and dummies.
