The former fishermen's village Dalyan just became a tourist center in the past 20 years. Dalyan is not located directly at the sea but at a channel which is quite untypical for fishermen's villages. This channel connects the Körcegiz-Lake with the sea. Directly beneath Dalyan this channel widens itself to a delta which is covered with 4-5 m high reed. The well-known boat trips through the reed are often organized by tourism-agencies. Tourists daily arrive in Dalyan in uncountable coaches to participate in that boat trip. If you travel on your own you have to charter your own boat which is possible without any problems as you will be asked if you wanted a boat trip as soon as you arrive in Dalyan. By the way there is sometimes a problem with parking lots in Dalyan.
To charter a boat talk about the route first. Maybe you do not want to have the trip to the mud bath. So there is only the tour in direction of the sea left. For your own private tour you will have to pay about 50-70 euro. But you have the possibility to decide on your own where you would like to go and how long you would like to stay. You should in any case stop at the beach and the Kaunos theatre. The trip goes through the reeds where you can see little restaurants and hotel complexes on your left hand side and rock tombs on your right hand side.
But Dalyan is more famous for its protection of the sea turtle Caretta. As Dalyan and its area has been declared as a nature reserve there are very strict building regulations. That's why there haven't been built big hotel komplexes now although there are many visitors. So I liked the city very much for it is comfortable and has its own character.
Kaunos
Opposite to Dalyan there are the ruins of Kaunos which had its height in the 4th century BC. The antique city was a seaport which was famous for salted fish and slaves.
You can reach Kaunos by boat from Dalyan. You will only have to walk 10 minutes to get to Kaunos. You can see at once the Acropolis. Entrance fee is about 2,50 Euro. Smart inhabitants offer a "tractor-taxi" directly at the entrance of Kaunos which will take you up to the ruins. I didn't use it as walking there is stressful but nice, too. Underneath the Acropolis there is the theatre from which you have an excellent view over the area, e.g. the Köycegiz-lake. But the view is even better if you walk up to the Acropolis. It's really fantastic but also a bit windy. You can overview the area from the delta of the river up to the sea. But please be careful you really have to climb up there. You can also find pictures here of the view.
Beach
You can reach Dalyan beach also only by boat. Please remember that the beach is also the nesting site for the Caretta-turtle and therefore mustn't be entered from 8 pm to 8 am. Noticeable is the vast number of crabs on the beach. There are also a bar/restaurant and toilettes. The beach is very quiet. I liked it very much. It's one of the most beautiful beaches I know.
