Nazar Boncuk

There are just few people who admit that they believe in it but almost all people do - in the so-called Nazar Boncuk. You can find it everywhere in Turkey. It serves as protection against the evil eye of certain people or against the evil influence of some things. Just as you can protect yourself and bring luck to you with casting plumb, shaking salt, smoking out evil or with spells you can also use this Nazar Boncuk for it.
This "superstition" is most of all widespread in the Aegean region. This has its origin at a man called Nazar who is meant to have had a very evil eye. There should have stood a very big stone in the former entrance of the harbour, which blockaded it. This Nazar was brought there, he saw the rock and said: "What a nice rock is this!" He had just said this when the rock got cracks and was split in several pieces. Since that time nearly all Turkish mothers put a small Boncuk on their new born children's clothes, because they believe that words like "What a sweet little child" or "Oh, how beautiful it is" are just said with envy. If the Boncuk breaks in two, it served the family well and you have to get a new one very quickly.
The Boncuk is not just put above doors, in the car or at the entrance of buildings but also very popular as decoration in different variations.
It really looks very nice and everybody who is a bit superstitious should not miss to get his/her personal talisman.
