Some rules of etiquette for your stay in Turkey
Turkey is an Islamic country. You should never forget this even if it is oriented westwards. I'd like to give some information how you should behave in Turkey and how you should meet people there. I'll mention the most important facts which should make your stay as easy as possible. Alcohol and Islam normally don't fit. In some other Islamic countries it is strictly forbidden. It is not forbidden in Turkey and you won't get penalties for drinking it. It is different with pork. You shouldn't eat it. Greeting: In Turkey you usually greet each other with handshake but if you are on friendly terms or even related to someone you normally will greet the person with a peck left and right on the cheek. I would also like to mention the often seen hand kiss. It is a sign of respect towards someone that is clearly older than you or to your parents. It is a symbol for: "Your place is above mine".
Salutation: Women are addressed as "Bayan" (Lady) or "Hanim" and men as "Bey" after the first name, e.g. Mehmet Bey!
If you would like to take some pictures of persons please ask them first.
Do not point at things or even persons with your finger.
Kissing and other caresses between men and women are not liked to be seen in public. It is rude to refuse an invitation and a counter invitation is expected as well as a present (no money!) when leaving. I do not want to say that you should accept every invitation in shops! You should not talk about Kurds or political topics.
Women should not dress too permissive, that is nothing sheer, with a deep décolleté, short skirts et al. You can prevent yourself from being some kind of fair game. If the pick up line is too annoying anyway just say friendly but definitely: No! (Hayir! or Yok!). Topless tanning is only permitted in some private hotel areas. FKK is forbidden.
You must take off your shoes when entering mosques. Women should wear a headdress, e.g. a hat or headscarf and cover their upper arms and legs. Men should not wear shorts. It is best not to visit mosques during prayer times. If you should enter it anyway behave quiet, inconspicuous and do not go past the praying people for it would make the prayer inefficient.
