Cappadocia
This unique landscape owes its formation to the vulcanoes Erciyes (3916 m) and Hasan (3256 m). 3 mio. years earlier these both volcanoes were still active and formed the Cappadocian landscape of today with their eruptions. Wind, rain, snow and differences in temperature played another important role within the formation of Cappadocia.
The Cappadocia of today consists of an area of 25 qkm and is on 1200 m above sea level. In the center of this landscape is its capital Nevsehir with 68000 inhabitants.
The variety of sights made either by man or by nature offers diversified and interesting highlights for every visitor.
We want to introduce a small part of it by the story "A perfect day".
Shortly after sunrise we start with a hot-air balloon and ride over the awakening, impressing landscape. Only the fizzling sound of the gas flame disturbs this absolute silence of the morning. An unforgettable experience which you should not miss.
Back on the ground of Cappadocia we have a big breakfast with hand-made typical specialties of Cappadocia together with Cay, the tasty Turkish tea.
After breakfast we need some walking so we wander through the "red valley" together with our private tour guide. With an observant eye and a bit of fantasy we discover many works of art in those tuff formations made by nature.
We travel on to Göreme, the biggest open air museum. You mustn't miss one highlight, the restored Tokali-Church. The small churches and living caves offer new interesting views again and again.
We have our lunch at one of the many restaurants in Avanos. This city of potters is located on the Northern boarder of Cappadocia at the "Red River" Kizilirmak. After lunch we visit Galip, the most famous potter, and marvel at his extraordinary hobby - he collects women's hair. Very worth seeing.
In the afternoon we go to Kaymakli and visit one of the both subterranean cities. This city was build in up to 12 floors downstairs and is equipped with a ingenious ventilation system. It is really phenomenal what people were able to build in the ancient times. This sightseeing tour is not to recommend for people that have agoraphobia. It is very near partly and you can often only walk in ducked posture but it is really worth seeing.
On your way back to the center of Cappadocia we stop at the valley of the monks. Afterwards we go to Uchisar and climb on one of the three forts. The ascension is not difficult and you can enjoy a fantastic view over the unique landscape. We will not miss to say goodbye to this nice day by watching the sunset on this mount.
We let this day die away at the restaurant of the small hotel Yusuf Pasa Konagi in Ürgüp while enjoying a tasty stone pot meal. And of course you should also try a bottle of Cappadocian red wine.
A unforgettable day in Cappadocia.
